Introduction to the “Euroscepticism to Euro-engagement” Project

The “Euroscepticism to Euro-engagement” project represents a dynamic and innovative international partnership involving eight diverse European organizations. Spanning a two-year duration, this initiative is designed to tackle the challenges of Euroscepticism and promote active engagement with the European Union (EU) among rural communities.
With a strategic focus on fostering dialogue and participation, the project aims to create a lasting positive impact in rural areas, bridging the gap between skepticism and active involvement in EU matters. A variety of interactive events and initiatives are planned, including EU awareness challenges, future vision festivals, empowerment roadshows, rural expos, symposiums, and citizen engagement platforms, culminating in the Euro Harvest Summit.
By emphasizing interactivity, inclusivity, and creativity, the project seeks to instill a sense of ownership, pride, and influence among rural citizens regarding the shaping of EU policies. The consortium comprises organizations from Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, Montenegro, and Ukraine, with each partner responsible for specific work packages that collectively contribute to the project’s comprehensive approach.
Ultimately, “Euroscepticism to Euro-engagement” aspires to transform rural communities’ perceptions of the EU, promote active participation, and create a legacy of informed citizen engagement and collaboration that will empower future generations.

Event Overview
From October 14 to 17, 2024, the picturesque town of Roșiorii de Vede hosted the WP1 – Kickoff Meeting and EU Nection Tour as part of the innovative project “Euroscepticism to Euroengagement.” This significant event brought together partners and participants from various backgrounds to engage in meaningful discussions about Europe’s future while celebrating its cultural diversity.

Day 1: Engaging with Partners and EU Trivia
The event commenced with a presentation of partners, where each organization showcased their unique contributions to the project through engaging PowerPoint presentations. Following the introductions, participants took part in an EU Trivia Challenge, a light-hearted yet informative activity designed to spark interest in the European Union. Teams competed to answer questions about EU history, institutions, cultures, and achievements, fostering camaraderie and a spirit of learning among participants.
The day also included detailed project presentations and management discussions, ensuring everyone was aligned on goals and expectations. A key highlight was the EU Body Program, which paired rural residents with EU enthusiasts, facilitating informal conversations. This initiative encouraged participants to share personal experiences and insights, leading to rich discussions and a deeper understanding of varying perspectives on the EU. Feedback from participants indicated that these interactions were invaluable, enhancing their knowledge and fostering a sense of community.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity
The first day concluded with the EU Inspired Cultural Fair, where partners showcased their countries’ traditional food, music, dances, arts, and crafts. This vibrant exchange not only highlighted the rich diversity of European cultures but also included local traditional ensembles, such as Grupul de Acțiune Locală Câmpia Bârnazului, who enchanted attendees with captivating dances from the region.

Day 2: Mapping Connections and Imagining the Future
The second day began with a fascinating workshop on Cucuteni pottery, an ancient tradition from the region known for its distinctive ceramic art. Participants learned about the history and significance of Cucuteni culture, including the intricate designs and techniques used by artisans. This hands-on experience allowed attendees to appreciate the craftsmanship involved in creating these beautiful pieces, fostering a deeper connection to local heritage.
Following the pottery workshop, participants visited the Cosoteni Monastery, the oldest church in Teleorman County. This historical site, now a functioning monastery, offered a glimpse into the rich religious and cultural history of the area. Attendees were captivated by the stunning architecture and serene atmosphere, which provided an opportunity for reflection on the spiritual dimensions of community life.

Local Engagement Presentations
Later in the day, esteemed representatives from Troianul, including the Mayor and members of the “We are Troianul” and “Împreună Pentru Teleorman” initiatives, presented local engagement strategies and community development efforts within the EU context.
Mapping the EU
One of the day’s main activities, Mapping the EU, invited participants to collaboratively create a large map of Europe. Each participant marked their countries, regions, or cities, adding pins to indicate places they had visited within the EU. This interactive activity visually represented the participants’ connections to Europe and facilitated vibrant discussions about travel experiences and cultural exchanges. The stories shared during this mapping activity were documented, highlighting the personal connections and experiences that shape participants’ views on the EU.
Envisioning the Future
Later, participants engaged in the Eu-Future Workshop, where they painted tote bags to creatively express their visions for the future of Europe and rural communities within the EU. This workshop encouraged participants to articulate their dreams and aspirations for a united Europe, fostering a sense of hope and collective purpose.
