Project Introduction

The ERC (Empowering Rural Communities: Youth-Led Spaces for Transformation) is an Erasmus+ funded initiative operating across Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria. The project addresses the critical gap in youth services within rural communities by providing evidence-based methods, practical tools, and comprehensive training to establish and manage inclusive youth spaces where young people can develop competencies and participate meaningfully in their communities.

Training Activity Completed

The training activity “Rural Revelry: Exploring Non-Formal Activities” has been successfully completed! Between June and August 2026, six specialized training modules were delivered to more than 100 youth workers and young people across rural communities. The trainings covered essential topics including digital skills, communication, leadership, project development, emotional intelligence, and community engagement.

Project Results:

Youth workers and young people gained practical skills applicable to their rural communities, including the ability to develop local projects, manage volunteer teams on limited budgets, and engage effectively with local authorities. Participants demonstrated improved confidence in leadership, communication, and digital literacy. Training materials were provided to all attendees, enabling them to continue learning and apply skills in their respective youth spaces. The trainings proved that rural youth respond positively to participatory, context-sensitive learning that addresses real community challenges.

The Importance of Youth Spaces in Rural Communities

A youth space is not merely a room with activities—it is a social ecosystem where young people can safely gather, build relationships, explore identity, and develop competencies that strengthen their agency and participation in community life. In rural areas facing geographic isolation, limited opportunities, and reduced access to services, youth spaces become vital.

Rural youth spaces address critical needs:

  • Create safe gathering places in communities where young people have few social outlets and limited mobility
  • Provide non-formal learning opportunities unavailable through traditional education systems
  • Enable youth participation and voice in community decision-making
  • Support personal development essential for employment and civic engagement
  • Build community cohesion by bringing young people together around shared interests

Looking Ahead

The ERC project recognizes that rural youth are not passive recipients of services, but active agents of change with unique talents and aspirations. By equipping youth workers with practical tools and supporting communities to establish welcoming youth spaces, we create pathways for young people to thrive and build meaningful futures in rural areas. The successful completion of the “Rural Revelry” training activity demonstrates the potential for transformative youth work in rural communities.
